3 Reasons Why Chemical Drain Cleaners May Not Be The Best Solution For Blocked Drains

Blocked drains can be a real nuisance because you will end up having to deal with sewage backups, low water pressure and possible water contamination. With all this in mind, blocked drains are a problem that should be taken care of quickly and efficiently.

If you are like a large percentage of homeowners, then the first thing that comes to mind when faced with blocked drains is to reach for those chemical drain cleaners. The cleaners are inexpensive, readily available in most stores, and for the most part, you can see results soon after using them.

However, from an expert plumber's point of view, here is a look at a few reasons why you should keep away from these chemical drain cleaners

1. It's Only A Temporary Fix

The accumulation of wastewater that causes blocked drains can be as a result of several things. The most effective and long-lasting solution to this problem is to identify the underlying cause and take care of it accordingly. Using chemical drain cleaners may clear your blocked drains, but only for a short while. This means that you will have to use the drainer every so often, which, by extension, means that you will be spending quite a bit of time and effort, not to mention money to clear your drain temporarily.

2. They May Damage Your Piping

Drain cleaners have a strong chemical composition and are very corrosive. That is why they can dissolve and disintegrated solid particles, grease and other matter that gets stuck in your drains.

Unfortunately, this corroding action is indiscriminate and may end up eating away at your piping, especially if you use way more than the recommended amount. Over time, your pipes may start leaking, and if you keep at it, the leaks will only grow bigger, leading to other problems such as decreased water pressure.

3. You Put Yourself At Risk

You should always exercise caution when handling chemical drain cleaner. Any small slip-up that will leave you exposed to the chemicals can have serious consequences for your health and wellbeing. Inhaling the fumes from the chemicals can affect your internal organs, and particularly your respiratory system. If the corrosive chemicals come into direct contact with your skin, you may end up with skin irritation and in extreme cases, severe burns.

Need help with blocked drains or hot water units? Forget the drain cleaning chemicals and always call in a professional plumber for a safe and long-lasting solution.
